About the Youth Cabinet

48 young yeople, aged 11-18 from across the county, giving young people in West Sussex a voice to effect change and make a difference to their local communities.

The process: You will stand for election in one of 24 areas. The 2 candidates with the most votes in each area are elected to Youth Cabinet (with the except of Horsham and Crawley where 4 candidates are elected).

The responsibility: Monthly Youth Cabinet meetings around the county (travel refunded), getting an insight into your constituents concerns and spending government money on young people’s local social action projects which make a difference or highlight an issue of concern for young people.

Opportunities … get involved with: film making, radio shows, anti-radicalisation campaigns, projects with ‘hard-to-reach’ groups, working with professionals and decision makers and lots lots more.

About the UK Youth Parliament

500 young people, aged 11-18  from across the UK, giving young people a voice nationally about issues that affect them. The UKYP runs national campaigns such as Votes at 16, Knife Crime and others and as an MYP you represent young people locally and nationally on such issues on their behalf.

The process: 4 UKYP reps for West Sussex. Stand for election in 1 of 4 areas*. 2 candidates with the most votes get elected as MYP and DMYP.

The responsibility…South East regional meetings are held every 2 months. You will represent approximately 23,000 young people, and hold MYP ‘surgeries’ as often as possible to listen to their views.

Why We Are Consulting

Applications to run for election are open from 1st December 2019 to 10th January 2020.

Elections voting will then take place throughout February 2020 and the new members will begin their role from 1st March 2020.

You are allowed to apply for the Youth Cabinet and for UKYP but your manifestos should be different as they are different roles, so think carefully about your information.
