Milk Supply: Request for Information

We Asked

We asked local dairy farmers if they would be interested in progressing an idea to install a milk vending machine at our Chichester site and if so, what might be required to make this happen.

You Said

Local farmers got in touch, expressing interest in the opportunity and letting us know some of the things we needed to think about. For example, their preference / requirements for

  • a site with level access
  • a site that enabled public access, not just staff access.
  • a full vending machine solution, with contactless payment.

We Did

We are offering to meet all the respondents on site to try and identify a viable location that would work with both our operations and theirs, and to understand if any enabling works, such as new power sockets, might be required.

Once we understand if the idea is practically deliverable, we will assess all the information to decide how best to proceed.

The County Council has committed to working to eliminate single-use plastic across our estate.

We have recently been told about an initiative at Telford and Wrekin Council, where a local dairy farmer has installed a milk vending machine in their main building to enable staff to reduce the consumption of plastic milk containers.

We are keen to explore if we can replicate this idea, or deliver something similar at our Chichester site. In addition to achieving a reduction in plastics, we would like to explore the potential for working with a local supplier, supporting a local farmer and reducing the carbon from food miles as part of this idea.

To help us understand if this idea is feasible, we are keen to hear from dairy farmers within West Sussex or delivery distance of County Hall Chichester, to understand what is required to turn this idea into a reality.

Please note this is not the start of a procurement process; a separate contract notice may be published in future to cover this requirement and start that process.

We need responses to be returned by Monday 1st June 2020 so we have time to incorporate these into formal proposals for the County Council to consider.
